Never did I think I would test positive for COVID!
It started as a bit of a lark. My husband began experiencing bronchitis symptoms after spending a day at the office. Bronchitis seems to be an annual event for Dave over the years, so we didn’t think too much of it. And he usually works from home these days. Because I had a COVID test last fall, in the hopes of seeing my father, I thought he should not miss out on the same experience. When the test results came back positive on April 22nd, we were shocked.
That evening, the twinges of illness came on quickly for me, and I thought perhaps it was just in response to his test result…but two days later, my positive result came in.
Everyone experiences COVID differently. When I hear people say, “COVID is like the flu,” to me, that‘s like coming across a baby field mouse on the trails…a slight surprise, and you carry on. That’s the flu. COVID, on the other hand, is following the path around the bend and walking into a “herd” of Sasquatch (is there such a thing). That’s COVID.
Our symptoms have overlapped and been vastly different. It has kicked the shit out of both of us. Extreme fatigue. High temperatures. Difficulty breathing. No taste or smell. And you don’t want to hear the rest. My worst moment was watching the ambulance take Dave from our home. I was left alone, not knowing what would happen next. It was only a few weeks previously that my brother left his home by ambulance and never returned.
We are both now improving but still have a long way to go. We are fortunate to have the excellent care and concern of our wonderful family, friends, and neighbours. I can’t imagine where we’d be without this support. Plus, of course, a team of medical professionals doing all they can.
Please stay safe and stay healthy!
