A few days ago, I decided it was time to purchase an item or two in honour of the beautiful spring weather we're having in Ontario, especially after returning from the sunny west coast and leaving the dreary winter months behind.  (Unfortunately, I really didn't have a lot of time for shopping while away.)

As my Capri's had already been pulled from their winter hide-away and my comfy sandals beckoned after having so recently massaged my feet while walking the miles of "The Strip," I headed to the mall in the bright sunshine in search of something light and fun.

I dove into the racks of blouses in one of my favourite clothing stores and had a few items ready to try on, when the conversation of the sales clerk and another customer caught my attention.  The customer had mentioned that she wanted to get her sandals out...and the clerk thought that would be okay.  However, seeing people wearing Capri's and sandals at this time of year was simply ridiculous.

As I emerged from the dressing room, I was embarrassed to be seen with my bare ankles.   I looked at the clerk and said how embarrassing this was...set the blouse down I had been prepared to purchase, and walked out.

I understood that the clerk hadn't really noticed what I was wearing, but her thoughtless comments cost the store a sale, and probably future business.

What comments are you saying aloud that could prove to be offensive to some?

Remember the words your mother drilled in: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."  Mom was right...and if you listen to her wisdom, you will gain the respect of your clients, your prospects, and anyone standing behind you that you may not have seen.
