A Proven Path—Now Personalized for You
This 9-week program draws from the time-tested curriculum I designed and taught for Creative Writing students at Fanshawe College—now reimagined as an intimate, virtual experience to support you in writing your most powerful work yet.
Each week builds on the last, guiding you step-by-step through essential storytelling elements, writing techniques, and personal feedback designed to help you grow as a writer—no matter your genre or experience level.
Week One: Jumping In
We’ll begin by identifying your personal writing goals and crafting a plan to build consistent, productive habits. You’ll discover how to find inspiration in everyday life, capture fresh ideas, and organize them for future use—laying a strong creative foundation for the weeks ahead.
Week Two: Creating Believable Characters
Whether you’re writing fiction or nonfiction, compelling characters are essential. You’ll learn how to craft well-rounded, realistic people who live and breathe on the page—characters your readers will never forget.
Week Three: Setting & Plot
A great story needs more than just great characters—it needs conflict. You’ll learn how to structure your story using the Twelve-Step Plot Guide and how to heighten tension to keep readers hooked. We’ll also explore setting through sensory detail to create a vivid, immersive world.
Week Four: Viewpoint & Dialogue
Explore the impact of different narrative viewpoints and discover how to give your story a distinct, consistent voice. Then dive into writing dialogue that sounds natural, reveals character, and brings every scene to life.
Week Five: Moving from Scene to Scene
Transitions matter. This week, you’ll master techniques for moving smoothly through time and space in your story—whether through linear scenes, flashbacks, or reflections—so your narrative flows with clarity and momentum.
Week Six: Short Stories vs. Novels & Writing for Children
Understand how to adjust your story’s structure depending on its format. You’ll compare the scope and pacing of short stories and novels, and explore how to adapt your voice, vocabulary, and length when writing for young readers.
Week Seven: Editing Your Work
Now it’s time to refine your draft. You’ll learn how to self-edit with precision—cutting clutter, tightening language, and spotting common pitfalls. This week is all about revising with intention so your work reads clean, strong, and true to your voice.
Week Eight: Creativity in All Your Writing
Discover how to hook your readers from the very first line. You’ll explore techniques for writing magnetic openings, crafting compelling titles, and infusing energy into every paragraph to keep readers engaged from start to finish.
Week Nine: Marketing Your Manuscript
It’s time to take your writing beyond the page. Learn how to prepare your manuscript for submission, craft a standout synopsis, and navigate the publishing world—whether you’re pursuing a traditional deal, exploring self-publishing, or considering a hybrid approach. You’ll also learn how to handle rejection, stay motivated, and recognize opportunity when it comes knocking.
